It is very important for your child to have the appropriate tools for learning. In Mathematics, an A4 5mm graphed exercise book, A4 lined book, and stationery, should be accompanied with an appropriate scientific calculator.

We appreciate that your child brings to school, an iPad (and maybe a mobile phone), however neither of these are suitable to use in Maths. Neither of these devices teach the skills necessary for your child to address “using appropriate technology” (as described by the Australian Curriculum) or allows them to move confidently into Senior School Maths. Now, whilst at school, all students will be required to lock their mobile phones in their lockers during the whole day, making them unavailable. iPads are not considered a recognised problem-solving tool by the SACE Board which manages our Senior School Maths curricula.

The Maths Learning Area has engaged the services of Abacus Calculators to allow our Middle School parents the opportunity to buy a suitable scientific calculator online.

By following the attached flyer, you can order a scientific calculator (FX82AUPL2ND), with added extras. The calculators has what is termed a ‘natural display’ where the screen shows exactly what is typed in. This assists in alleviating errors during use. Also available is a Maths Kit containing tools which we use during the year.

Your child will not need a graphics calculator (TI-84PLUSCE) until Year 10 (unless they are in the year 9 Summit Classes) and this will also be dependent on the type of Maths that they wish to pursue in Senior School.

We encourage you to order through these flyers. These calculators will be delivered to the school and distributed in the first weeks of the new school year. The warranty will be held by Abacus Calculators, if anything goes awry. We hope you are able to take part in this offer.

For any further questions around calculators, please do not hesitate to contact the school, via telephone 8394 5400 or via email dl.0797.info@schools.sa.edu.au.
